The Houmas House Plantation is beautiful, but so are the haunting remains of a sugar plantation in Florida that was burned by the Seminoles in the 1830s. I loved seeing the vegetable gardens as much as the floral ones. There’s a vegetable garden located right behind and to the side of Houmas House…let’s take a closer look. I promise I hadn’t had one too many Mint Juleps in the Houmas House Restaurant prior to taking these pictures. I thought perhaps they leaned due to past hurricanes or the winds from the river but the story behind the leaning Gentlemen is much more mysterious than that.

History

As I mentioned last week, the well-known movie, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, had many scenes filmed at the house. I had never seen the movie, so we watched it that night when we got back to my sister’s house. It was scary and we all enjoyed it and seeing the exterior of the plantation in the movie. We also watched Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and Strait Jacket while we were visiting and they were all good. You can see all the movies & TV shows filmed here which is really interesting. John Burnside was born in Tyrone County, Ireland around 1810 of a poor family.

Other Haunted Plantations in Louisiana

The crewman’s natural reaction was to express concern that a little girl was in a construction zone because it was not safe for children. The charm of the house, the land and the stately old oak trees is eternal and so are the memories you will make there. Once a sprawling plantation of more than 300,000 acres, Houmas House is a magnificent historical landmark that has survived wars, floods, abandonment — and the test of time.

These roofline additions were a way to admit light and air into the structure below. Cupolas were integrated into the roof construction, meaning someone in the building could look up and into the cupola. Although typically enclosed, helping keep creatures, debris, and weather elements out of the structure, cupolas often have openings, such as louvers or operable windows, for air to circulate. Because of these features, cupolas promote air circulation and prevent moisture buildup, which is why you’ll see them on many barns, stables, and garages. With its expansive gardens, stately mansion, restaurants and cottage, the Houmas House plantation also makes a wonderful wedding venue and is available for corporate events. The house is stately and majestic inside and out, with period antiques, artwork and artifacts helping tell the story of plantation life.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can do a small group haunted history carriage tour and let the horse do all of the work. This haunted Louisiana plantation house features a 125-foot long veranda, which is well known for its ornamental ironwork. It also has a stained glass entrance that was hand-painted, etched and patterned after the French cross to ward off evil. After doing research into the history of the house, the Houmas House staff thinks they may know the girl’s identity — though it remains somewhat of a mystery. Some say that all of that activity is what led one of the workers to see a young girl descending the beautiful freestanding stairway in the house.

So I’m not glorifying slavery at all, but rather looking thoughtfully at a beautiful home and garden plantation house that does have a rich history, with slavery a big part of that history. The website does mention 550 slaves at Houmas House during slavery days and before the Civil War. Cupolas were especially popular as part of the Picturesque Movement, which had a big impact on residential architecture when these styles were developing. It was a period of design focused on developing a home’s architecture to better appreciate its surrounding landscape.

Unfortunately 16 of the workers devised a scheme to profit from the large trees by floating the logs downriver to New Orleans. Not only did these men fail to make it to the city and collect any money, something happened to all of them and none of their bodies were ever recovered. But as the levee construction crews continued their work, tree after tree crashed to the ground beneath the saw blades of the workers. In the name of progress, the “Gentlemen” were downed, the levee was raised, and the road was widened and paved.

The next morning we started our our day with breakfast at the Dixie Cafe. As the sun started to set we returned to our cozy cottage for some much needed rest. She did a wonderful job sharing all the history and answering all the questions we had. We enjoyed our meal, the staff and the ambiance of the restaurant.

Sitting on a curve of the Mississippi River, the Houmas House and Gardens dates back 240 years. This iconic sugar cane plantation has seen a lot of history over the years, so join me on this tour of this stunning Classical Revival house that is still there on the grounds. The plantation is left with 38 acres, down from the hundreds of acres that it started with. The Sugar Cane barons of the 18th century lived along the river and there were hundreds of plantations.

Kind of unusual given that the owner actually lives on the property. Our tour was at 7 pm on a Friday night (The house closes at 8 pm.), and we saw numerous couples dressed very nicely. We thought there was a wedding party on site, but it turns out that the "fine dining" restaurant was open. Cannot comment on the food, but it is apparently pretty popular. The last time I visited a plantation in Louisiana was Oak Alley in 2015 with my sister. Slavery was a horrific and tragic part of Southern history and the plantations that dot the Mississippi River in Louisiana were some of the biggest offenders.

But a cupola that is accessible so that a person can look out of it—and possibly even fit entirely inside of it—is called a belvedere. Styles that developed with strong influence from the Picturesque Movement, like Italianate houses, often incorporated belvederes as a lookout. For example, the belvedere on the Houmas House in Darrow, Louisiana, offered a high vantage point to view and appreciate surrounding lands. On a great curve of the Mississippi River and on high ground first selected by the Houmas Indians stand the great Tuscan columns of The Houmas. The mighty Mississippi River gave birth to this land over the millennium, creating the fertile lands which became the great fields of Sugar Cane, Cotton, Corn, Indigo, tobacco and more. In 1803 Donaldson and Scott built a new center hall cottage directly in front of the1700’s French House.

At the age of twelve or thirteen, he somehow managed to obtain passage to America, with only a few pennies in his pocket. He began his young career in the grocery house of Talbot Jones in Baltimore. He quickly excelled, became a junior partner, and moved to Roanoke. John Burnside and Oliver Beirne, Andrew Beirne’s son, were the same age and matured together in Mr. Beirne’s business, becoming very close friends, a friendship that lasted through the years. John Burnside arrives in New Orleans with Oliver Beirne in 1837 to open a dry goods store named Beirne and Burnside. After the death of Andrew Beirne in 1845, Oliver returned to Virginia to manage the family interests and the business Beirne and Burnside became J.

Houmas House has an Inn on the grounds, as well as 3 restaurants you can choose from. I read that events and weddings are held here and I can see why. In 1882, Oliver enlisted his son-in-law, William Porcher Miles (widower of Elizabeth Beirne, Oliver’s daughter) to manage his Louisiana Estates. In 1888, at the age 77, he died in New Orleans, leaving as estate valued at over five million dollars. The Houmas was inherited by his five grandchildren, the children of William Porche Miles.

It was impossible to restore the house to a definite period without sacrificing elements from other important periods of its history. The choice was made to select the best features from various periods to showcase a legacy of each family in the mansion. After extensive restorations to the house and grounds, the Houmas re-opened for tours in November of 2003.

There are a variety of tour / museum packages and combos. The museum provides historical information about life on the Mississippi. After a brief look around we checked into one of the cottages on the property of the Houmas House.

Other Haunted Plantations in Louisiana

And among those stories are those that include the supernatural. As I soon discovered during my visit, residents of the New Orleans area and all of South Louisiana have a deep sense of heritage that goes back many hundreds of years. The grounds have been updated and really make a gorgeous backdrop to this magnificent house. The walls have a hand painted mural depicting sugar cane fields, appropriate for this home of a Sugar Baron. Stepping inside the entry hall, you get a good look at the expansiveness of this beautiful plantation home. The limbs were pruned and kept from going into the buildings but the sprawl was unreal.

Step Back In Time At This Haunted Louisiana Plantation

Our tour guide was very informative, sharing life on the plantation in the house, sharing stories of many of the things seen around the home. In April of 1848, there were thirty family members and guests in residence at the Houmas, and just as many servants in the household. There was an abundance of beef and mutton from the plantation, as well as fruits and vegetables from the gardens. The Deluxe Suite is the most luxurious suite of the Inn.

Houmas House Plantation Grounds

There was also a very large gift shop and a great restaurant on the grounds. Guided mansion tours are offered daily and offer a glimpse of plantation life. Although cupolas are not as common today, they still serve a useful decorative function. Aesthetically, cupolas change the profile of a building by creating a more dynamic roofline. For example, cupolas add variety to low-pitch roofs and single-story homes. And don’t forget to consider garages, sheds, barns, and landscape elements like gazebos or porch roofs when identifying potential locations for a cupola.

On the heels of the great flood came the Great Depression, which spawned the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The construction of new and higher levees was among the projects that helped create work and wages for people who no longer had the means to support themselves. The little girl in the blue dress does appear to be the figment of someone’s overactive imagination because her presence has been witnessed by many people at Houmas House.

History

It sprawled out from the mother tree way over to the building in the distance. Outside, we meandered the sidewalks and took in all the beautiful sights in the garden. The website says that the gardens are built to show off all 4 seasons with indigenous Louisiana plant life.

The Houmas House is named after the Houmas indians who were natives of the area back in the 1700’s, when this land was settled. You can read all about the history of Houmas House on the History page of their website. In the Spring of 2003, the Estate of Dr. George Crozat auctioned off the entire contents of the mansion and grounds. Kevin Kelly, a New Orleans Businessman, purchased the mansion and surrounding grounds and began the task of restoring the mansion and gardens. The mansion, having undergone over 200 years of construction and remodeling by various owners, reflected a multitude of styles.

Houmas House Gardens

You can see the latest prices on their official tour page here. Overall we were very impressed with the Houmas House and cannot wait to visit again someday. After breakfast we toured the Great River Steamboat Museum.

She was so knowledgeable and also shared stories that made us laugh. The gardens were amazing and actually were the prettiest we have seen so far. We are on a Mississippi River Boat cruise, and this was one of our stops.

In 1892, the children transferred all their interests to the Miles Planting Company and William P. Miles was appointed President. The mansion tour was an hour long and there were maybe 12 of us on the tour, so relatively small. The gal who did the tour was very knowledgeable and eager to share. There’s a white tablecloth restaurant too called The Carriage House.

Located near New Orleans, the 250-year-old house is just one of the estates located in Louisiana’s River Parishes that is open to the public. Apparently, when the other Gentlemen were being felled to widen the road, 16 of the workmen schemed to make a profit by floating the huge trees down the river to be milled in New Orleans. The 16 “profiteers” literally sat on the backs of the trees as they floated down the river and in the end, every one of them died.

Two rooms plus a separate bathroom make it spacious and perfect for staying a couple of days. The sofa sleeper folds out to a full size bed in addition to the King size four poster bed. The French doors open into a courtyard shared by other guests, but surrounded by lush gardens. The mansion is completely handicap accessible and each room provides several places to sit throughout the guided tour. If staying in New Orleans and seeking transportation, we suggest renting a car and visiting multiple plantations while seeing Houmas House.

Last May a friend who loves old homes as much as I do, took me on a wonderful tour of some of the beautiful historic homes in Louisiana. I took way too many pictures on that trip which is why in February 2015, I’m still sorting through them all. I can’t wait to take you inside Houmas House and I hope to do that very soon. But for today, in pure defiance of this bitter cold weather, we’ll enjoy summer again as we stroll through the beautiful gardens surrounding Houmas House Plantation. This is the Latil’s Landing Restaurant (dinner only, fine dining), which is one of 3 restaurants on the grounds. This one is a really upscale fine dining experience, which would be really fun.

Houmas House Plantation boasts immaculate grounds with meticulously maintained landscaping. Sculptures, exotic plants, and a Japanese footbridge adorn the expansive property, along with charming fountains. As you explore the premises, tranquility envelops you, offering a refreshing escape. The variety of blooming flowers and trees is simply breathtaking. Comfortable and romantic, each room is decorated with old world furnishings, unique artwork and comfortable seating nooks. While enjoying the bygone era, the need for modern amenities is not overlooked.

Apple-2 Houses, Nevada Roadtrippers

Cohen has made a career of examining, authenticating and refurbishing Apple-1 units for auction houses and others and was called in by John Moran to do the same. The first 1,000 or so Apple IIs shipped in 1977 with a 68-page mimeographed "Apple II Mini Manual", hand-bound with brass paper fasteners. This was the basis for the Apple II Reference Manual, which became known as the Red Book for its red cover, published in January 1978. All existing customers who sent in their warranty cards were sent free copies of the Red Book. The Apple II Reference Manual contained the complete schematic of the entire computer's circuitry, and a complete source listing of the "Monitor" ROM firmware that served as the machine's BIOS. The Apple II (stylized as apple ][) is an early personal computer that was created by Apple Inc.

Partially destroyed in a fire in 1963, the house was rebuilt by the architect and his son, Dion, as a reworking of the original design and the modern architectural principles it represented. In 1990, the property was taken over by California Polytechnic Pomona University pursuant to a 1979 agreement to make the building accessible to the public and to maintain it in perpetuity. The house has since been utilized by the university as a classroom for courses and seminars, and is open as a visitor’s center for Neutra enthusiasts. In 2000, when the house was placed on the World Monuments Watch, California Polytechnic Pomona University was working to secure funds to restore the building. With the release of MousePaint in 1984 and the Apple IIGS in 1986, the platform took on the look of the Macintosh user interface, including a mouse. The original Apple II came with an 8 KiB ROM containing a BASIC variant called Integer BASIC as well as a resident monitor called the Apple System Monitor. Initially, only cassette tape was available for storage, which was considered too slow and unreliable for business use. In late 1977, Apple began to develop the Disk II floppy disk drive and required an operating system to utilize it. A single HGR page occupied 8 KiB of RAM; in practice this meant that the user had to have at least 12 KiB of total RAM to use HGR mode and 20 KiB to use two pages.

The text mode and low-res graphics mode use the same memory region and the same circuitry is used for both. Color on the Apple II series uses a quirk of the NTSC television signal standard, which made color display relatively easy and inexpensive to implement. Color was added later by adding a 3.58-megahertz subcarrier signal that was partially ignored by black-and-white TV sets. Color is encoded based on the phase of this signal in relation to a reference color burst signal.

The estimates are not unfounded; an operational unit was sold for $905,000 by Bonhams auction house in 2014. The Soviet Union radio-electronics industry designed Apple II-compatible computer Agat. Roughly 12,000 Agat 7 and 9 models were produced and they were widely used in Soviet schools.[39] Agat 9 computers could run "Apple II" compatibility and native modes. "Apple II" mode allowed to run a wider variety of (presumably pirated) Apple II software, but at the expense of less RAM.

One popular hack involved connecting a teletype machine to the cassette output. Rather than a dedicated sound-synthesis chip, the Apple II contains a toggle circuit that can only emit a click through a built-in speaker or a line-out jack. More complex sounds, such as music or audio samples, are generated by software manually toggling the speaker at an appropriate frequency.

APPLE II HOUSE NEVADA TEST & TRAINING RANGE 2012

Wozniak's open-architecture design and Apple II's multiple expansion slots permitted a wide variety of third-party devices, including peripheral cards, such as serial controllers, display controllers, memory boards, hard disks, networking components, and real-time clocks. There were plug-in expansion cards—such as the Z-80 SoftCard—that permitted Apple II to use the Z80 processor and run programs for the CP/M operating system,[38] including the dBase II database and the WordStar word processor. The Z80 card also allowed the connection to a modem, and thereby to any networks that a user might have access to. But they expanded significantly with the development of bulletin board systems in later years. Third-party sound cards greatly improved audio capabilities, allowing simple music synthesis and text-to-speech functions. This two-story house is one of two left from the so-called Apple II test of the effects of nuclear blasts on civilian targets, including a complex of buildings, cars, communications equipment, and food supplies.

The Apple II PCB lacks any means of generating an interrupt request, although expansion cards may generate one. Program code had to stop everything to perform any I/O task; like many of the computer's other idiosyncrasies, this was due to cost reasons and Steve Wozniak assuming interrupts were not needed for gaming or using the computer as a teaching tool. A fusion of 1930s International Style and 1960s California Modernism, the Neutra VDL Research House II was designed to demonstrate the possibilities of contemporary building materials and the idea of connecting interior space with the exterior environment. The building was first constructed in 1932, designed by the famed architect Richard Neutra, and was partially financed by Dutch industrialist C.H. The Byte Shop, a Bay Area computer store, commissioned the nascent company to build 50 Apple-1 units, and upon delivery the owner was “a bit taken aback,” Isaacson wrote. Apple-1s, as assembled by Wozniak and Jobs, were sold mostly as bare-bones boards and did not include screens, keyboards or cases, far from the polished metal-and-glass Apple products sold today.

A Landmark of Design and Innovation

This technique requires careful and precise timing, rendering it difficult to display moving graphics while sound is playing. As you can see from the above video, not many houses made it through the blast. We took a closer look at two of the houses that survived and a tiny bit of history in the story above. While the history here is fascinating, it’s a bit alarming to think of the impact this had and is having on surrounding towns. Apple DOS was superseded by ProDOS, which supported a hierarchical filesystem and larger storage devices. With an optional third-party Z80-based expansion card,[38] the Apple II could boot into the CP/M operating system and run WordStar, dBase II, and other CP/M software.

The wood-frame house has a side-facing gable roof with clapboard siding over diagonal sheathing. The 29-kiloton Apple II test occurred on 5 May 1955; the house stood within 8,000 feet of ground zero. Although the building appears to be in relatively good condition, damage from the blast is clearly visible. The windows were blown out and the upper portion of the brick chimney has shifted slightly. Nearby is another house built for Apple II, identical in form except for its brick veneer.

It’s comprised of houses once populated by mannequins and stocked with packaged goods. Code-named Apple II, the test was part of Operation Teapot and took place at Yucca Flats on the Nevada Proving Grounds (now the Nevada National Security Site). This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. When the Apple II initially shipped in June 1977, no expansion cards were available for the slots. This meant that the user did not have any way of connecting a modem or a printer.

I will say that you’ll need to handle it with care or you may see some chipping around the edges. However, we chose to paint the sides instead of using cover panels. We were able to paint match the cabinets and I think it gives a much more professional finish.

Our vast selection of door styles caters to every home decor, from traditional to contemporary. Light gray finish perfect for a modern minimalist look. Record the features you like and dislike in your current space. Then think about what you’d like to keep or change in your new space. When it’s time to sit down with your Menards Team Member, they will have the information they need to start planning a room that’s perfect for you.

Make Your New Kitchen Happen

You can clean the cabinets with a microfiber cloth to rid them of any smudge marks. Another great benefit of Klearvue is their versatility in cabinet accessories and options. With so many size options, you can easily create inner spice racks that pull out or hidden waste baskets. If you want to get real fancy, you can even make hidden interior drawers for your junk or to hide chocolate from your toddlers. Designing your perfect space is easy with their online software, U Create. It is a free online tool, available via Menards, that allows you to play with your space and actually see how the different cabinets will look with various configurations.

Needless to say, I love that there are tons of sizes and options that can fit any space. With our narrow pantry, we found the perfect size to fit and still make the room not feel overly crowded. What I love about this program is it is a great way to see how different styles and sizes can impact your design concept. If you have higher ceilings or a smaller space, it is a great idea to play with the heights and widths of the different cabinet sizes to see what would look good for your home. Klearvue cabinetry is a manufacturing company that produces box cabinets, available on the Menards website and stores.

It allows you to track progress as decisions and updates are made- it’s a must have reference when meeting with Menards kitchen designers. If there's more than one cook, or if your family gathers in the kitchen, you'll want to keep safe distances for free flowing traffic. Keep all work aisles to a minimum of 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for two cooks. How much countertop landing space should you include for safety? A good rule for the counter space is 12 to 15 inches of landing area around the range, refrigerator and microwave, with 24 to 36 inches on either side of the sink.

I loved how easy it was to design our projects using their U Create software. It really is a well thought-out tool that makes the process easy. If you plan to update your home, the cost of materials and labor can be a big shock. When renovating our kitchen, the cost of cabinets alone was enough to send me into a panic. I knew we wanted something that was both affordable and made with high quality materials. As you are organizing and checking your list, you can systematically organize it by cabinet parts and number them based on that.

When your order comes in, you’ll want to check off that you received everything based on your spreadsheet. If you have kids in your family, the you’ll appreciate that not every single smudge shows. Regardless, kids will test out how well your cabinets can withstand wear and tear.

CABINETS THATGIVE YOU MORE

If you have a contractor picking them up, I would reiterate to the contractor that you want those boxes double checked. Nothing beats custom cabinetry, but you pay for that look and it isn’t a luxury that everyone can or will want to implement in their own home. If you want to take that a step further and have custom cabinets, be prepared to spend even more.

You should pay attention to the correct sides of each item. Having everything set aside and organized really helped the process go smoother. To help combat the panic of the sheer volume of products ordered, you’ll want to stay organized. One tip that really helped us, is to keep a spreadsheet of everything you ordered. You’ll want to know the item number, how many of each is ordered, and a brief description.

What sets this company apart is that you can really get a custom look for much less. Not only that, but since you order via Menards, they will be in stock within 7-10 business days. Watch our ‘How To Measure Your Kitchen’ video and download our measuring checklist to get started.

The day your cabinets arrive you will have a ton of boxes. When you look at all you have to do you may start to panic and think you aren’t capable of this project. If you are picking up the cabinets yourself, you’ll want to spend time checking the products to ensure the boxes are not damaged and handled with care.

Early Apple IIs were often sold with a Sup'R'Mod, which allowed the composite video signal to be viewed in a television. Apple added vent holes to the case within three months of production; customers with the original case could have them replaced at no charge. He previously wrote for the USA Today network of newspapers including the Ventura County Star, where he covered the Thomas and Woolsey wildfires and the Borderline mass shooting, the Spectrum & Daily News in Utah and the Lansing State Journal in Michigan.

The Neutra VDL Research House II also received an award from the Los Angeles County Preservation Fund for structural renovation of roofs on the garden house and the penthouse and for the installation of  a drainage system to prevent further water infiltration problems. The Byte Shop spruced up the boards, enclosing them in an economical-at-the-time koa wood case. The investment may pay off as auction house and Apple-1 experts expect the unit to sell for close to $500,000, if not more.

U.S., California sue Apple, alleging company monopolized smartphone market

“A lot of people just want to know what kind of a person collects Apple-1 computers and it’s not just people in the tech industry,” Cohen said. On Tuesday, John Moran Auctioneers will auction off a functioning Apple-1 computer hand-built by Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs and others in a Los Altos, Calif., garage in 1976. The system was the rock upon which the trillion-dollar Apple empire was built. Some commercial Apple II software booted directly and did not use standard DOS disk formats. This discouraged the copying or modifying of the software on the disks, and improved loading speed.

It was unearthed from the Rancho Cucamonga home of a former Chaffey student who had purchased it from the professor for $650 in 1977. Apple released Applesoft BASIC in 1977, a more advanced variant of the language which users could run instead of Integer BASIC for more capabilities, such as the ability to use floating point numbers. From setting up your device to recovering your Apple ID to replacing a screen, Genius Support has you covered.

Between September 1977 and September 1980, annual sales grew from $775,000 to $118 million.[46] During this period the sole products of the company were the Apple II and its peripherals, accessories, and software. Although it sold well from the launch, the initial market was to hobbyists and computer enthusiasts. Sales expanded exponentially into the business and professional market, when the spreadsheet program VisiCalc was launched in mid-1979. VisiCalc is credited as the defining killer app in the microcomputer industry.

He was born and raised in Southern California and attended Saint Mary’s College of California. “One of my reactions was, ‘Wow, I don’t know who that instructor is, but I hope they’re not reading the news now and thinking about how they sold it for $600,’” said Steve Siedschlag, a computer science professor at Chaffey. Siedschlag and his colleagues have so far been unsuccessful in identifying the professor. But the Chaffey unit is made unique, and possibly more valuable, by its koa wood case, its accessories and its provenance, Cohen said.

The result is that the position, size, and intensity of a series of pulses define color information. These pulses can translate into pixels on the computer screen, with the possibility of exploiting composite artifact colors. With a few small-scale logic chips and a cheap PROM (programmable read-only memory), he created a functional floppy disk interface at a fraction of the component cost of standard circuit configurations.

Early Apple II games from the 1977–79 period often ran only in text or low-resolution mode in order to support users with small memory configurations; HGR not being near universally supported by games until 1980. When the color burst reference signal is turned on and the computer attached to a color display, it can display green by showing one alternating pattern of pixels, magenta with an opposite pattern of alternating pixels, and white by placing two pixels next to each other. Blue and orange are available by tweaking the pixel offset by half a pixel-width in relation to the color-burst signal. The high-resolution display offers more colors by compressing more (and narrower) pixels into each subcarrier cycle.

It was one of the first successful mass-produced microcomputer products, and it played a significant role in the early development of the personal computer industry.[3] It has an 8-bit microprocessor. By the end of 1977 Apple had sales of $775,000 for the fiscal year, which included sales of the Apple I. This puts Apple clearly behind the others of the "holy trinity" of the TRS-80 and Commodore PET, even though the TRS-80 was launched last of the three. [45] However, during the first five years of operations, revenues doubled about every four months.

Cohen said the unit was not in “bad condition” when he examined it, although the keyboard required complete rebuilding. About 200 Apple-1 units were assembled by Wozniak, Jobs and others, 175 of which were sold. About 60 Apple-1 units still exist, Cohen said, with only about 20, including the Chaffey unit, capable of functioning. Follow a container of board games from China to St. Louis to see all the delays it encounters along the way. The unit is dubbed the “Chaffey College Apple-1” because its first owner was identified as a Chaffey professor.

Original Apple IIs had jumper switches to adjust RAM size, and RAM configurations could be 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 36, or 48 KiB. The three smallest memory configurations used 4kx1 DRAMs, with larger ones using 16kx1 DRAMs, or mix of 4-kilobyte and 16-kilobyte banks (the chips in any one bank have to be the same size). The early Apple II+ models retained this feature, but after a drop in DRAM prices, Apple redesigned the circuit boards without the jumpers, so that only 16kx1 chips were supported. A few months later, they started shipping all machines with a full 48 KiB complement of DRAM. The coarse, low-resolution graphics display mode works differently, as it can output a pattern of dots per pixel to offer more color options. These patterns are stored in the character generator ROM, and replace the text character bit patterns when the computer is switched to low-res graphics mode.

Because of that Soviet developers preferred native mode over "Apple II" compatibility mode. A 6502 assembler was soon offered on disk,[33] and later the UCSD compiler and operating system for the Pascal language were made available. The Pascal system requires a 16 KiB RAM card to be installed in the language card position (expansion slot 0) in addition to the full 48 KiB of motherboard memory. Disk users normally purchased a so-called Language Card, which had Applesoft in ROM, and was located below the Integer BASIC ROM in system memory. The user could switch between either BASIC by typing FP or INT in BASIC prompt. Apple also offered a different version of Applesoft for cassette users, which occupied low memory, and was started by using the LOAD command in Integer BASIC.

The final zip is 600 feet long and carries you from a height of 75 feet back to ground level. The climate in Great Stirrup Cay is rainy and more humid in the summer (May to October) with 3.5 inches of rainfall per month. Great Stirrup Cay, just like most cruise stops in the Caribbean, enjoys a warm tropical temperature throughout the year.

Overview of the Island’s Layout and Facilities

It's the ideal spot to grab a bite in between activities, and with its proximity to the beach, you can enjoy your meal while soaking up the sun. Keep in mind that lunch is typically served between 11-2, but the schedule may vary depending on your ship's schedule, so be sure to check before heading over. Great Stirrup Cay is accessible only by tender boats since it does not have a dock. Tender boats are small vessels that transport you from your cruise ship to the island's shore. The process of tendering is relatively simple, and you will receive instructions on how and where to board the boats.

Is there a community of people who lived on the island before it was purchased? I would love to learn more about life on the island for the people employed by the cruise line. Jumbey Beach Grill is the largest dining venue, offering barbecue-style food in a buffet setting. Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, and jerk chicken are popular, along with pizza, salads, and corn-on-the-cob. For something different, belly up to the Abaco Taco bar for Mexican food that's made-to-order.

Cabana and villa guests have a food truck option close to them called Tropic Like It’s Hot. The truck serves a limited menu of sandwiches and Caribbean-themed lunch items, plus dessert. Since Great Stirrup Cay is an extension of the ship, you can pay for drinks, tours, and rentals with your cruise card. The only reason to bring cash is to go shopping at the island’s straw market.

Before all of that, though, it was a private hideout while the British settled in Nassau. There are well maintained bathroom facilities located close to the food and bar locations. Indulge in the exclusive dining experience of The Haven Restaurant on Norwegian Cruise Line, where luxury meets gourmet cuisine in a serene, private setting.

Live music with a Caribbean flair is played by local musicians at the bandstand directly across from the main beach at Bertram’s Cove. He has four siblings, Isabella Jane, who is adopted, and his half-sisters, Suri Cruise, Sunday Rose Kidman, and Faith Margaret Kidman. Despite all the pain, Connor still claims to have a good relationship with his mother. Connor first heard of his adoption in 2012 during a news conference about a film he featured in. A reporter asked him about his biological parents, but Connor was shocked and later had to talk things out with his father. Sources say that Connor was adopted to save Tom and Nic’s marriage because it was almost falling apart. Due to their personal and emotional differences, they almost broke up.

A confused Connor then turned towards his dad in confusion. Connor was also raised in the Church of Scientology with his sister, per Stylecaster. Although he stays away from the limelight these days, he did dabble in acting during his younger years. In 2008, he starred in Seven Pounds as a younger version of Will Smith’s character Ben, with co-stars Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson. He then joined the cast of Red Dawn in 2012, playing a minor character alongside industry heavyweights like Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. Despite being raised by Hollywood’s then-power couple, Bella and Connor have kept their lives mostly private.

Children, height and career

Since they needed a reason to stay together, Connor had to come along. Neither Tom nor Nicole ever mentions anything about it. Connor was reportedly unaware of his adoption until the year 2012 during a news conference for Red Dawn when a reporter asked him about his biological parents.

Tom and Katie eventually divorced in 2012, and the actor has rarely been seen out with his daughter since the split. Believe it or not, one of their last photographs together was at Disneyland on January 25, 2012. Tom Cruise is an iconic actor, but more importantly, he’s a father.

The questions about their dynamic were fueled when Kidman accepted an Emmy for Best Actress in a Limited Series in 2017 for her work in "Big Little Lies" and mentioned only her youngest kids in her speech. "I am also a mother and a wife. I have two little girls, Sunny and Faith," she said. “I’m very private about all that," she said, referring to Cruise and Kidman Cruise. "I have to protect all those relationships." In a snapshot from his birthday trip to Costa Rica, Cruise holds up a formidable yellowfin tuna that nearly rivals his height.

The Top Gun star, who has been married three times, shares two adopted kids — Connor Cruise and Isabella ‘Bella’ Cruise — with his ex-wife, Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman. He also has one biological child, a daughter named Suri with his other ex-wife, Katie Holmes. Nicole Kidman is one of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry. As such, there will always be an interest in what she does and what happens in her personal life. While she is willing to share some of it with fans, like her fertility issues, there are other aspects she prefers to keep under wraps, like her relationship with her two oldest children.

Cruise shares Connor, 28, with his ex-wife Nicole Kidman. The couple, who were married from 1990 to 2001, also adopted 30-year-old Isabella. In March, sources told Page Six that Tom and Suri have been estranged for some time. Tom, 61, also shares daughter Isabella with Kidman, 56, whom he was married to from 1990 to 2001. They adopted Isabella and Connor in 1992 and 1995, respectively.

Despite not being Tom’s biological child, he seems to have some resemblance to his dad. Connor Cruise is quite active on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. He regularly updates his followers about his life and work.

While he may hit the occasional red carpet if he has a movie premiering, the actor is rarely photographed anywhere else, or with his kids. Learn more about Tom’s family dynamic with his son and two daughters below. As for his personal life, Connor reportedly married fellow Scientologist — an Italian woman named Silvia Zanchi — in 2019.

Like many famous people and celebrities, Connor Cruise keeps his personal life private. Once more details are available on who he is dating, we will update this section. Isabella and Connor Cruise are the two adopted children of Tom and Nicole. Connor was born on January 17th in the year 1995 in Florida, United States of America. His famous parents then adopted him when he was just one month old.

In 2019, it was reported that Connor had gotten engaged to an Italian Scientologist called Silvia Zanchi. Silvia works at Scientology’s Belleair Mission near Clearwater, Florida, where Connor lives. At first, he did not like the idea as he did not believe in the ideologies of The Church of Scientology. He, however, changed his mind a while later, and currently, he is a Scientologist just like his dad and sister Isabella. According to sources, when Connor asked about his skin color, his parents told him that he inherited traits of Nicole’s ancestors from Australia. If there is one person who knows what it’s like to have celebrity parents, then it is Connor Cruise.

Tom Cruise is arguably one of the most famous members of the Church of Scientology, and his older children, Bella and Connor Cruise, have followed in his footsteps. "They are adults," Nicole Kidman said in a 2018 interview with Who magazine. "They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists, and as a mother, it's my job to love them." She added that she would continue to accept them because she is their parent.

He is always posting on Instagram about his love of fishing. Cruise and Connor were also photographed together in October 2019 in London before boarding a private helicopter. Cruise and Kidman adopted both Connor and his older biological sister, 30-year-old Bella Cruise, when they were still married. Connor has mostly stayed out of the spotlight in recent years despite his famous parents. He did, however, attend the Diesel Fashion Show for Milan Fashion Week in February.
